After months of campaigning, walking tirelessly door to door in many neighborhoods and reaching out to the voters of Paterson, Election Day has come and gone and there are new faces on the City Council. Sincere congratulations are offered to the following: Anthony Davis, Aslon Goow Sr, William McKoy, Vera Ames-Garnes, Julio Tavarez and Andre Sayegh.
Personally, I want to single out Julio Tavarez. I know Julio for several years now and have a great deal of respect and admiration for him. I know he will be a tireless advocate for the people of the 5th Ward. Despite the many personal and frivolous attacks made by his opponent, Julio remained focused on the issues facing the 5th Ward and offered fresh and genuine solutions. Congratulations Julio!

I was thinking about writing something grandiose, something epic designed to inspire you to go to the polls on Tuesday May 13th to vote for your representatives on the Paterson City Council. I thought to write about the blood that was shed to give us this wonderful right to vote, a right not shared by our friends in such varied countries like China, Saudi Arabia or our Latin compatriots in Cuba. I thought about the sacrifices made by thousands of young people who organized marches and demonstrations in Jim Crow’s South, participated in sit-ins and in the process, rallied many more to their cause.
I thought and came to this conclusion…
No long epic treatise will be written nor an exhaustive explanation of why you should vote.
I share only the following simple request: get out there and VOTE. Do it for your city. Do it for your community. Do it for your family’s future and for your own. Paterson, the time is now. Get out there and VOTE!

This month our featured personality is Angel Villalongo (He is the third Villalongo we have featured here) His name was submitted by his aunt and Godmother, Rosie Gonzalez. Here is what she had to say about Angel:
I just wanted to tell you a little  about my Godson which is also my nephew, Angel Villalongo.
Not only is he a full time teacher at a private school but he is also in charge of the youth group at St. Agnes church in Paterson. He’s been involved with other youth groups as well. I’ve had to move out of Paterson and live now in Franklin, NJ Sussex County. My health is not well and Angel as busy as he is still finds time to come visit me, this should tell you how thoughtful he is. He was born and raised in Paterson. There is a lot more that I can say but for now I just think he would be great for your personality segment.
We looked up Angel’s Seton Hall website and here is how he describes himself: [Read more →]
